About Breast Implants

implant placement

Dr. Abramson offers numerous implant options regarding material, profile, shape, and size. During your consultation, he will collaborate with you to determine the most suitable type of implants for your goals and body type, ensuring results that seamlessly enhance your natural frame.

Material

  • Saline: Saline breast implants have a silicone shell and are filled with a sterile saline solution. These are typically inserted empty and then filled after placement, which allows for the use of smaller incisions. (2)
  • Silicone: Silicone breast implants have a silicone shell and a silicone gel filling. They closely replicate the softness of natural breast tissue. Silicone breast implants can vary in firmness, with more cohesive filling offering a more stable structure. (2)

Profile

Implant profile refers to the projection, volume, and base diameter of the implant. (3)

  • Low Profile Implants: Low-profile implants have a wider base with less projection. Dr. Abramson recommends these types of implants for anyone interested in more subtle and natural-looking enhancements.
  • Moderate Profile Implants: Moderate-profile implants balance their width and projection while offering more noticeable increases in volume.
  • High Profile Implants: High-profile implants have a narrower base and offer the most projection in comparison to other profiles, creating a fuller appearance.

Shape

  • Round Implants: Round implants offer more equal fullness in both the upper and lower breast. They are known for maintaining their shape well; this is the most popular implant shape.
  • Teardrop Implants: Teardrop-shaped implants, also known as anatomically-shaped implants, are wider at the base and narrower at the top. This creates a slope that replicates the natural breast shape, resulting in more realistic enhancements.

Size

incision-placement

Breast implant size is measured in cubic centimeters (cc) rather than cup size. Breast implants can range from 150cc to over 800cc, with the best size for you depending on your proportions, anatomy, and goals. Dr. Abramson will help you determine what size will best suit you based on these factors; he can even help you visualize your potential results using Crisalix 3D imaging technology. This imaging software can generate a preview of your results, giving you an idea of what different implant sizes will look like.

Candidates

Breast implants can benefit those interested in enhancing the volume, shape, and symmetry of their breasts or restoring their breast volume after a previous surgery. All patients should be in good overall health and maintain realistic expectations regarding the results of their procedure.

Ideal patients are nonsmokers or are willing to quit using nicotine for an extended period of time. Dr. Abramson will determine each patient’s candidacy for breast implants during a consultation.

Personal Consultation

Before scheduling your breast augmentation procedure, you will attend a personal consultation with Dr. Abramson. During this consultation, he will converse with you about your medical history, aesthetic concerns, and desired appearance to create your surgical plan. Together, you will go over the details of your procedure, including any potential risks or complications, and the outcomes you can expect. He will take the time to answer any questions you may have, as this consultation is meant to help you make well-informed decisions about your treatment.

The Crisalix 3D imaging technology can also be incorporated into this appointment to help you visualize what your results may look like.

Procedure

Incision Placement

Dr. Abramson is one of only a few doctors who offer multiple incision options for breast augmentation. These include the inframammary incision, transaxillary incision, transumbilical incision, and the periareolar incision.

  • Inframammary Incision: The inframammary incision technique features an incision in the breast crease, or inframammary fold. This is Dr. Abramson’s most commonly used technique, as it allows for optimal control over implant placement. Scars are discreet, but may be visible when the patient is lying down.
  • Periareolar Incision: This incision is placed around the areola, where the pigmented skin of the areola helps to hide scarring—recovery time may be shorter with this method as well.
  • Transaxillary Incision: The transaxillary incision is placed in the armpit. While this reduces visible scarring, it decreases control and visibility during implant placement, as the armpit is farther from the breast.
  • Transumbilical Incision: For the transumbilical incision, or TUBA placement, Dr. Abramson will make an incision within the navel (belly button). This technique also minimizes external scarring but diminishes placement control. It is less commonly used and is also only suitable for saline implants.

Implant Placement

Dr. Abramson can place your breast implants either above or below your pectoralis muscle, known as subglandular or submuscular placement, respectively. (2) He prefers the submuscular method, as it often produces more natural-looking results and reduces the risk of capsular contracture, or the excessive tightening of the scar tissue capsule that forms around the implant.

Recovery

For optimal results, you should follow the postoperative care instructions provided by Dr. Abramson. It is important to have someone stay with you after the surgery to assist you with things like cooking and housework. Most patients need to dedicate at least two full days to resting after their surgery. It is common to experience swelling, bruising, tenderness, moderate pain, and fatigue during this time. Some patients find it necessary to take an over-the-counter pain reliever; in other cases, Dr. Abramson can prescribe medication.

After three or four days, you will likely feel more able to get up and do things. However, you will need to be mindful and avoid strenuous activity until Dr. Abramson approves.

Results

Initially, the breast implants may appear high on the chest, but they will settle into a more natural position as you recover. After your implants settle, you will be able to enjoy larger, more symmetrical breasts. Dr. Abramson’s careful techniques ensure that scarring is as discreet as possible so that you can feel confident even in revealing clothing and swimsuits. While implants are designed to be long-lasting, all patients need to get them replaced eventually. Implants typically last 10-15 years, with many patients having their implants for longer. Once implants are ready to be removed, patients can receive new implants of a similar or different size/material, depending on aesthetic preferences.

FAQ

Are breast implants safe?

Surgeons generally consider breast implants to be safe when placed by a board-certified surgeon with extensive experience. During your consultation, Dr. Abramson will discuss any risks and complications so you have a full understanding of what to expect.

How long will my breast implants last?

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Most last 10-15 years before they need to be replaced. Depending on the type of implant you have, you may need to attend periodical check-ups to monitor their integrity.

Will I be able to choose the size and shape of my implants?

Yes, Dr. Abramson offers implants in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and profiles. During your consultation, he can help you select the best pair for your figure and treatment goals.

Will breast implants affect my ability to breastfeed in the future?

Dr. Abramson recommends waiting to receive implants until you finish having children and no longer breastfeed; however, you may still choose to get implants if you desire. We ask that you discuss any breastfeeding goals with Dr. Abramson during your consultation so he may plan with them in mind when creating your surgical plan.

What happens if a breast implant ruptures?

If a saline breast implant ruptures, your body will safely absorb the fluid, and your implant will slowly lose volume and deflate. Silicone implant ruptures are often called “silent ruptures,” as they are not immediately visible and require an MRI to detect.
