What is Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, offers a rejuvenated look to the area surrounding your eyes by improving the appearance of your upper or lower eyelids or both. The procedure can make you seem more rested and alert. If you feel that your eyes seem “hooded,” old or tired, then eyelid surgery may be able to help.
The idea of what is an aesthetically useful appearing eyelid has changed over the past 20 years.
Frequently in the past significant amount of excess fat were removed from the upper eyelids in an effort to create a more youthful appearance. However down the road this sometimes lead to a more hollowed look. Combinations of removal of some fat or sometimes fat grafting to the eyebrow area and upper lid can create a more youthful appearance.
It’s important to have Dr. Abramson assess what the cosmetic problems are so that the appropriate surgical procedure can be planned.
It is important for Dr. Abramson and the patient to be on the same page in determining the best approach to improving the youthful appearance of the eyelid. Many patients are very adamant about not changing eyelid shape and this must be taken into account when planning the surgical procedure.
Scars for eyelid surgery are minimal and sometimes surgery can even be performed using incisions on the inside of the lower eyelid. Ancillary procedures such as fat grafting, chemical peels and laser can be used to further enhance the cosmetic result. Make an appointment to discuss with Dr. Abramson all of the options available including new technologies to determine what procedure is best for you.
Dr. David L. Abramson understands how important your eyes are to the overall appearance of your face. He has helped many men and women with eyelid surgery at his New York City and Englewood, NJ, locations. Patients drive from Manhattan and outlying areas to work with Dr. Abramson and bring their eyelids back into shape.
Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?
As you grow older, the area around your eyes is often the first part of your body to show signs of aging. More than half of all blepharoplasty patients are more than 50 years old, but younger people often undergo the procedure, too. One of the main criteria for eyelid surgery is rejuvenating healthy facial tissues and muscles.
Symptoms Addressed By An Eyelift
- Loose or sagging skin which creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
- Excess fatty deposits which appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
- Bags under the eyes
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
When you meet with Dr. Abramson, he will give you a thorough evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery. He has treated patients from all over our community so he has extensive experience with the consultation process.
About Your Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery features incision lines that are designed to conceal any scars. To correct droopy upper eyelids, a cut is made inside the natural crease of the upper eyelid. The surgeon will then reposition the fat deposits, tighten the muscles and tissue and/or remove the excess skin. With lower eyelid surgery, the incision may be made below the lower lash line to remove excess skin. An alternate technique for lower eyelid surgery is a transconjunctival incision, which is hidden inside the lower eyelid and allows for the redistribution or removal of fat.
