About Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

Breast cancer does not just physically affect the body; it can have psychological effects as well. Oncoplastic breast surgery is a type of breast reconstruction procedure that involves a breast surgeon and a plastic surgeon. The breast surgeon removes cancerous breast tissue by performing a lumpectomy, a procedure that conserves the healthy breast tissue and removes tumors and/or unhealthy tissue. Dr Abramson is a plastic surgeon who is experienced in many surgical methods designed to enhance the appearance of the breasts after the breast surgeon has removed all of the cancerous portions. After the removal of the cancerous tissue, many women are left with visible changes to the appearance of their breast(s). During the oncoplastic breast surgery, Dr. Abramson is present with your breast surgeon to rearrange the remaining tissue, add autologous fat, and/or utilize additional surgical methods to improve the appearance of the breast(s) by creating better symmetry, volume, and shape for natural-looking results.

Breast Lift

A breast lift is a procedure that removes excess skin and raises the position of the breasts for a more youthful-looking appearance. Droopy skin can affect the way your bras fit and cause uncomfortable rashes along the lower breast fold (inframmary crease) that affect your quality of life. Dr. Abramson can restore your self-confidence by removing the excess skin and lifting your breasts for a more youthful-looking appearance. Dr. Abramson can perform several different types of breast lifts based on your underlying anatomy:

  • Crescent: Dr. Abramson can remove excess skin for a smoother appearance by making a thin incision along the upper half of the areola.
  • Donut: For mild sagging, Dr. Abramson can make a longer incision along the edge of the areola.
  • Lollipop: Dr. Abramson can make an incision along the areola and extend it vertically along the lower side of the breast until it reaches the lower breast crease.
  • Inverted T/Anchor: Dr. Abramson can make an incision that extends vertically along the underside of the breast and horizontally along the inframammary crease. (2)

Breast Reduction

A breast reduction reduces the size of the breasts by removing excess fatty and glandular tissue to reshape the breast mounds. If you have naturally larger breasts and would like to reduce their size, Dr. Abramson can perform this procedure during oncoplastic breast surgery. This procedure includes the removal of excess skin to lift the breasts and repositioning of the nipple areola complex, if needed, for natural-looking results and a youthful appearance.

Benefits

There are several benefits to receiving oncoplastic breast surgery combined with reconstructive surgery, which include:

  • Increased self-comfort: Many patients choose oncoplastic reconstructive surgery to feel more confident and/or comfortable with the appearance of their breasts after breast cancer removal. Dr. Abramson provides patients with reconstructive alternatives to improve their breast symmetry, size, and shape, and hopes to diminish the emotional upset, including anxiety and feelings of loss, that often accompany the diagnosis of breast cancer.
  • Minimal additional downtime: Oncoplastic reconstruction generally adds minimal additional downtime to the recovery period associated with the breast cancer removal surgery alone.
  • Customized Treatment Plans: Dr. Abramson will spend time with you discussing your individual options for breast reconstruction, based on your specific anatomy and the size, type, and location of the breast cancer.

Candidates

Suitable candidates for oncoplastic breast surgery typically:

  • Have early-stage breast cancer.
  • Have been recommended for oncoplastic surgery by their breast surgeon.
  • Desire breast-preserving surgery instead of a full mastectomy.
  • Are interested in achieving breast symmetry after their lumpectomy is performed.
  • Have no contraindications for surgical intervention based on their general health status.

Candidates should have realistic expectations about what they can achieve with the reconstructive procedure(s) they select with Dr. Abramson, and they should be prepared to follow the post-operative recommendations provided by Dr. Abramson and his staff.

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Abramson and his staff will discuss your overall health, your oncoplastic breast surgeon and their recommendations for you, your current breast cancer diagnosis, previous surgeries, current medications, and family history of breast cancer. We will also ask about your aesthetic goals to determine the most effective type of oncoplastic breast reconstruction surgery for your needs. If you would like to address additional body goals, Dr. Abramson can also discuss combining your treatment with other procedures, if that is an option for you.

To prepare for breast surgery, you must stop taking some medications and supplements that may thin the blood. You must also stop smoking temporarily, typically 6 weeks before and after your procedure, for optimal results.

We recommend that you run errands ahead of time and that you prepare your meals so you can focus on your recovery. You should arrange for a trusted adult to drive you home after your procedure and care for you for the first 24-48 hours afterward. We will also provide specific instructions to help you prepare for your procedure, based on your procedure(s).
