About eCO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing

eCO2 laser skin resurfacing works by essentially vaporizing the damaged outer layer of skin and heating the deeper layers. This triggers the body’s natural healing and growth responses, stimulating collagen production to target wrinkles, uneven texture, acne scarring, sun damage, and skin laxity over time. (1)

Unlike traditional ablative lasers that may be less precise, the eCO2 laser is micro-ablative. This means that it administers energy through uniquely small channels. This leaves the surrounding skin unaffected, only addressing the specific areas of concern.

Benefits of Skin Resurfacing with the eCO2 Laser

With the eCO2 laser, patients can effectively:

  • Soften signs of aging
  • Diminish facial scarring
  • Correct sun damage
  • Tighten the skin
  • Increase collagen and elastin production
  • Minimize large pores

Candidates

If you are seeking to correct moderate to severe wrinkles, sun damage, uneven texture, acne scarring, and other imperfections, you may be an ideal candidate for eCO2 laser skin resurfacing. This powerful and precise CO2 laser is also ideal if you struggle with skin laxity, as collagen and elastin production can have skin-tightening benefits.

You must be in relatively good health, free of conditions that could impair healing, and be a non-smoker (or willing to quit for an extended period of time). You should also maintain realistic expectations for your procedure.

Personal Consultation

During your personal consultation, Dr. Abramson or another skin specialist will evaluate your medical history and skin concerns. They will also ask you questions about your current lifestyle, including diet, skincare routines, and sun protection habits, as well as any past procedures you may have undergone. After gathering the necessary information, your skin specialist will create a personalized treatment plan with your skin goals at the forefront. They will also provide a cost estimate for your treatment and answer any questions you may have. Contact us online or call any of our offices to schedule your personal consultation.

Preparing for Laser Skin Resurfacing

Effectively preparing for your eCO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment ensures that your skin heals properly and optimizes your results. Our team typically advises that you:

  • Discontinue the use of retinoids and harsh chemical exfoliants
  • Avoid all forms of tanning two weeks prior to treatment
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements
  • Arrive with a clean face free of makeup, lotions, or sunscreen
  • Stay hydrated

Procedure

Dr. Abramson or another skin specialist will begin your procedure by cleansing your skin and applying a topical numbing agent to the treatment area. Next, they will provide protective eyewear as he begins to prepare the laser settings. They will calibrate the eCO2 laser to the optimal settings for your unique concerns. Following this, they will precisely glide the eCO2 handpiece across the treatment areas, delivering microscopic laser energy in small sections throughout the treatment area(s).

The laser may cause a warm, tingling sensation or a feeling of mild snapping throughout your procedure, but the topical numbing agent will minimize any discomfort. (2) Depending on your specific concerns, your skin specialist may pass the laser machine up to three times per treatment area. As the laser heats the tissues, cold air will be released from the device to keep your skin safe. Once your skin specialist has passed the laser over your treatment areas enough times, they will remove your protective eyewear and apply a cooling protective ointment to calm your skin and minimize redness and swelling.

Recovery

After your procedure, your face will appear red and swollen, but applying soothing and occlusive ointments like petroleum jelly or other medical-grade barrier creams frequently will help calm the skin and protect it as it heals. Resting, elevating the treated areas, and cold compresses can also help reduce redness and swelling. After three days, tiny crusts and scabs may form and begin to shed; you must not pick at them, as this can cause scarring. For the first four to five days, avoid intense exercise, hot showers, and saunas to prevent your core body temperature from increasing and causing inflammation. The initial healing will last about two weeks, after which, redness begins to fade, and the skin’s surface begins to heal. It is crucial to avoid sun exposure and use high-quality sunscreens during this period to protect your skin. You will begin to see long-lasting results after six weeks as the redness gradually fades. While the initial texture and tone improvements will quickly appear, your body will continue to produce new collagen for two to six months.

eCO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing Results

Patients often notice a youthful glow and healthier-looking skin soon after their first eCO2 laser skin resurfacing session. However, the stronger regenerative effects, such as improved firmness, texture, and wrinkle reduction, will develop over time as collagen production increases.

To further enhance and maintain your results, our team recommends that you apply a high-quality sunscreen daily and avoid sun exposure to prevent new wrinkle formation and dark spots. We also recommend incorporating gentle and effective medical-grade skincare products to support your skin’s long-term health.

These results are highly durable and can last anywhere from two to ten years, depending on your age, diet, lifestyle, skin quality, and treatment details.

Corresponding Procedures

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are various injectable treatment options that restore volume in different areas of the face. These treatments help to diminish signs of aging by reducing fine lines and wrinkles through subdermal volume boosts. While eCO2 improves skin texture, dermal fillers help to balance features and smooth out expression lines for a fully rejuvenated facial appearance.

BOTOX®

Botox is a non-surgical injectable treatment that directly targets the muscles that form moderate to severe lines on the forehead, neck, mouth, and eyes. Botox can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, and skin bands of the neck by relaxing the facial muscles. Pairing eCO2 laser skin resurfacing treatments with Botox can improve surface texture and offer superior anti-aging results by preventing new lines from forming.
