What are Breast Implants?

Breast implants, also known as breast augmentation surgery, are used to enhance the shape and size of the breasts. There is a variety of methods that are used to achieve this goal, but breast implants are the most effective and safest option. Normally, implants are pouches that are filled with silicone, saline, or another type of fluid. They are surgically implanted to improve the shape, size, and texture of the breast.

Benefits of Breast Implants

Several types of breast implants are offered by Dr. Abramson. His goal is to make sure that patients are happy with the results they see after surgery. The implants that are placed surgically allow women to decide how they want their breasts to look. This includes the shape of their breasts, the overall texture and firmness, and their cup size.

There are many ways that breast implants will improve your appearance. Some of the main ways we’ve seen this surgery benefit our patients are:

  • Balancing out a woman’s figure
  • More self-esteem and confidence
  • Fuller breasts
  • An improvement in breast shape and symmetry
  • Improving the appearance of breasts that have been affected by pregnancy or weight loss
  • The reconstruction of the breasts after a mastectomy

Boob implants are a great way to return a youthful volume to your chest. You will be astounded by how much this surgery will transform your whole appearance.

Procedure Options

There are many options that women have to choose from when it comes to breast implants, including the material they are made from, their size, and their shape. The choices they make will affect the final position of the implants, their placement, and the size of the incisions.

Implant Placement

implant placementOne of the main decisions that women need to make when it comes to breast implants is if the implant will be placed underneath or above the chest wall muscles. When implants are placed under the chest wall muscles, this gives a more natural shape and texture. However, it means more recovery time after surgery and greater discomfort since the muscles have to adjust to the implants.

Most of the time, implants are placed underneath the muscles to reduce the incidence of capsular contracture. In some rare occasions, the implants may be placed above the muscles.

Incision Location

incision-placementFor the most part, an incision is made in the inframammary fold, which is located under the breast. This is where the implants will be inserted. The benefit of using this method is that Dr. Abramson will have optimal control over the implant placement during the procedure. However, this method can lead to visible scars, particularly when the breasts are exposed while a woman is lying down. Another option is to make an incision in the armpit and insert the implants. This method leads to less scarring on the breasts. This method decreases the level of control Dr. Abramson has when placing the implant, however, as there is a greater distance from the armpit to the breast.

Women who would prefer less obvious incisions can opt to have an incision made through the belly button or around the areola of the nipple. When the incision is made around the areolas, scarring is less noticeable and recovery time is usually quick and uneventful.

Saline and Silicone Breast Implants

There are two different options for implants, ones that are filled with saline or ones that are filled with silicone. Both of these options have been approved by the FDA, and each offers its own benefits. Dr. David Abramson and his team can help those who are interested in this procedure to choose the best option that will help them achieve their desired results.

Saline-Filled Implants

Breast implants that are filled with saline are the safest option. Saline is natural and non-toxic. If the implant breaks, the saline inside of the implant will absorb into the body.

This is something that is quickly noticed because the implant deflates almost right away. Ruptures are unusual, but if they do happen, silicone can threaten a person’s health.

Silicone-Filled Implants

Most patients prefer silicone implants because they look and feel real. Saline implants also achieve this goal, but not to the same degree as silicone implants. Silicone implants are filled before the surgery begins, whereas implants filled with saline are first placed in the body and then filled.

Because of this, saline implants require smaller incisions during surgery.

Implant Shape

There are many details to consider when planning out the shape of your implants.

Implants come in two shapes: round and teardrop. Round implants are the most popular shape as they help to increase the overall shape of the breast and improve cleavage. Teardrop shaped implants are an anatomical shape that are fuller at the bottom and help to naturally enhance your chest. Other factors to consider are size and projection.

Size

Implants vary in size so that we can better customize your procedure. Whether you are interested in large or small breast implants, there is a size for you.

Profile

Implants are offered in a range of low, moderate, and high profile. Low profile implants will improve the width and shape of the breast while only projecting the breasts minimally. Moderate profile is the more frequently chosen type of implant. This profile selection will allow for moderate improvement in the overall breast. Following the natural progression of the profile sizes, the high profile will apply the most improvement in breast projection.

Preparation

For most women, breast implant surgery is something that makes them feel excited as well as nervous. They are excited about all of the benefits that can come as a result of the surgery, but they may feel worried that the implants will look and feel natural.

To help women who are concerned about these issues, Dr. Abramson will spend the time to help you get an idea of the results that you can expect.

It is important for women to know that after the breast implant surgery, their bras, shirts, and swimsuits will not fit correctly.

Procedure

Your preferred anesthesia will be applied to help the procedure be safe and comfortable. Once you are resting, Dr. Abramson will begin the surgery. The predetermined incisions will be placed and your implants placed in your breasts. Your incisions will then be closed and bandaged.

Results & Recovery

You will notice results immediately following the procedure. However, to see complete results, you will need to follow the postoperative care instructions provided by Dr. Abramson and wait three or four weeks.

Most patients need at least two days of rest after their surgery. It is common for women to experience swelling, bruising, tenderness, pain, and tiredness after breast implant surgery.

It may be necessary to take an over-the-counter pain reliever, or Dr. Abramson may prescribe medication. It is important to have someone stay with you after the surgery to do tasks that you will not be able to complete, such as cooking and housework.

After three or four days, you will likely feel like getting up and doing things. However, you will need adequate physical support, and you will need to be careful. All strenuous activity will need to be avoided for at least one week after surgery.

Complementary Procedures

On their own, breast implants may be able to provide extra support and lift your chest. Most women require a breast lift with implants to provide their best results. In a breast lift with augmentation procedure, excess tissue is removed so that your breasts will be returned to a perkier, higher position. A breast lift with augmentation is a common procedure to help truly transform a woman’s chest. This procedure will enhance your breasts while improving your feminine physique.

Cost

For your financing needs, Alphaeon™ and Prosper® are offered, since breast implant costs vary by patient.
