About Tummy Tucks

The tummy tuck is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while tightening the underlying muscles. This can help create a flatter, more toned abdomen and enhance the overall contour of the body.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is suitable for both men and women who have tried diet and exercise but have been unable to achieve the desired results. It is important to note that a tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure, but rather a body contouring surgery that focuses on improving the appearance of the abdomen.

The ideal candidates for a tummy tuck are those in good overall health, non-smokers, and who have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure.

What Happens in a Tummy Tuck Procedure?

During a tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Abramson employs a comprehensive approach to address various concerns and deliver exceptional results. The procedure begins with the administration of general anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery.

The first step involves making surgical incisions strategically placed in inconspicuous areas, such as within the natural contours of the abdomen. These incisions allow Dr. Abramson to access the underlying tissues, including the abdominal muscles and excess skin.

Next, any excess skin is carefully removed, creating a smoother and more streamlined appearance. In cases where there is significant fat accumulation, liposuction may be incorporated to sculpt the waistline and further enhance the results. Dr. Abramson uses the tumescent technique, whereby a saline and lidocaine solution is used to numb the area and make it easier to remove fat. Using this technique means that blood loss is minimal and there is virtually no need for pain management in the early recovery stages. (1)

A crucial aspect of a tummy tuck procedure is abdominal muscle tightening. Dr. Abramson skillfully repositions and sutures the weakened or separated muscles, restoring their strength and integrity. This not only enhances the contours of the abdomen but also provides improved core support. The belly button, often affected by the changes in the abdominal area, may also be repositioned during the procedure.

After undergoing a tummy tuck, it is crucial to follow the postoperative care instructions provided by your plastic surgeon.

What To Expect After Your Tummy Tuck

Posture

For the first two weeks, it is important not to stand up straight or lie down flat. Dr. Abramson recommends reclining in the semi-Fowler position, where there is a 35-40-degree angle at the head of the bed. (2) This reduces the risk of hypertrophic scarring and straining on the incision.

Mobility & Movement

Initially, you may experience limited mobility due to tightness and soreness in the abdominal muscles. It is important to follow Dr. Abramson’s guidelines regarding physical activity to avoid complications. Avoiding straining or overexertion at this time is vital to your recovery.

Compression Garments

Wearing compression garments post-surgery helps reduce swelling, provides support to the abdominal area, and assists in contouring the newly sculpted abdomen. Patients should wear their compression garments around the clock for several weeks until otherwise directed by Dr. Abramson.

Medication Requirements

Dr. Abramson will prescribe antibiotics and pain medications to prevent infection and manage any discomfort. It is essential to strictly adhere to the prescribed medication regimen for a smooth recovery.

Lifestyle Restrictions

Do not smoke, vape, or consume any nicotine products during your tummy tuck recovery. The chemicals in cigarettes and vaping devices restrict blood flow, slow the healing process, and increase the risk of post-surgery complications. (3) We also caution patients not to drink alcohol or take certain medications and dietary supplements, as these can thin the blood.

Diet & Nutrition

Following a balanced diet rich in nutrients promotes healing and minimizes the risk of complications. We will provide dietary guidelines specific to your recovery needs.

Emotional Wellbeing

It is normal to experience a range of emotions during the recovery period. Surrounding yourself with a strong support system, engaging in activities that bring you joy, and maintaining open communication with your surgeon can greatly contribute to your emotional well-being.

What Happens While I’m Healing from a Tummy Tuck?

Wound Care

Proper wound care is crucial for successful recovery after a tummy tuck. Follow Dr. Abramson’s instructions regarding dressing changes, application of ointments or creams, and cleaning the incision sites. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing the wounds vigorously, as this can irritate the surgical area.

Showering and Bathing

Two to seven days after your tummy tuck procedure, you will be able to take a short shower (no longer than 10 minutes). Dr. Abramson advises patients to keep the incision as dry as possible. To ensure a safe and effective shower routine after a tummy tuck, consider the following tips:

  • Avoid using loofahs or washcloths on the incision sites.
  • Be cautious when adjusting the shower temperature to avoid extremes of hot or cold water.
  • Do not expose the incisions to direct water pressure from shower heads.

Resuming Activities

Immediately after your tummy tuck surgery, you will need a period of rest and limited physical activity. In the initial stages of recovery, walking is encouraged as a way to promote blood circulation. Walking can be started within a few days after the surgery, but it should be done slowly and without overexertion. Begin with short walks around your home or neighborhood, gradually increasing the duration and distance as tolerated. Remember to listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard.

It is crucial to give your body enough time to heal before engaging in any strenuous physical activity. Typically, patients can start light exercises, such as gentle stretching and low-impact activities like exercise bikes, around four to six weeks post-surgery. However, it is essential to consult with Dr. Abramson before starting any exercise routine to ensure that you are fully healed and ready for more intense workouts.

Follow-Up Appointments

Remember, every patient’s recovery process is unique. Dr. Abramson will provide you with personalized instructions based on your specific case. It is crucial to attend all follow-up appointments to ensure that your healing progress is monitored closely and any concerns can be addressed promptly.

What About Tummy Tuck Scarring?

Scarring is an inevitable part of any surgical procedure, including tummy tucks. However, with proper scar care, the appearance of scars can be minimized over time. Dr. Abramson will provide instructions on how to care for your incisions, including when and how to apply scar creams or silicone sheets.
